ABOUT
DR. JOHN E. MARTIN
OVERVIEW
Dr. Martin is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, teacher, student mentor, and behavioral health researcher. He recently retired from professorships in psychology, psychiatry, and medicine at a university, medical school, and theological seminaries, and now holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Psychology at San Diego State University.
On the path to his doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Auburn University, 1978), Dr. Martin earned master’s degrees in Experimental Psychology (1972) and Speech Pathology (1974) from New Mexico State University, followed by a clinical internship/residency as Chief Resident in Psychology at the Jackson VA Hospital and University of Mississippi Medical Center Consortium (1977–78).
Subsequently, Dr. Martin held a number of academic and clinical appointments at major hospitals and universities, including the Jackson (MS) VA Medical Center, where he directed the Behavioral Medicine Program and Clinic, and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior.
This was followed by a professorship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (1988–89), and by service as Professor of Psychology and Director of the Behavioral Medicine Program of the San Diego State University/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (1986–2007). Dr. Martin then taught as Professor of Clinical Psychology at Fuller Graduate School of Psychology (2007–2010), as well as a visiting professor in graduate schools in Germany and South Africa.
RESEARCH AND PUBLISHED WORKS
Dr. Martin has authored or co-authored over 80 clinical research publications, chapters and three books, and presented 180 scientific papers at professional conferences in the fields of clinical psychology, health psychology/behavioral medicine, addictions treatment, motivational counseling, and Christian psychology. He has also served as Associate or consulting editor of a number of scientific psychology, psychiatry and behavioral medicine journals, as well as on U.S. government (VA, NIH, NIA, NHLBI) research grant review boards. Dr. Martin has been awarded over $2.5 million in Federal, State and private research grants in the fields of health psychology and addictions.
PRIVATE CLINICAL PRACTICE
Dr. Martin maintains a private clinical and consulting practice, focusing on relationship counseling, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) intervention, conflict resolution, anger management, addictions treatment, and Christian counseling. As an expert in the field of motivation and behavior change, Dr. Martin has conducted training workshops for medical and psychological professionals, as well as for international business, academic, and church organizations. Additionally, he has made multiple trips to Southern Africa as a scientist, researcher, and psychologist for the war on HIV/AIDS, during which he has conducted research and professional training on counseling interventions for HIV prevention, intervention, and lifestyle change across government clinics and church organizations.
Mr. Martin lives in Orange County, California, where he maintains his private practice as a licensed clinical psychologist, marriage therapist and Christian counselor and pastor through his church, as well as small business entrepreneur, writer, and author.
